Licensing and hours: what US banking offers assume
In the United States, people who advise on mergers, acquisitions and capital raises at a broker-dealer generally register with FINRA. That means passing the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam and the Series 79 Investment Banking Representative exam, usually within a few months of joining as an analyst. Banks sponsor and pay for both exams.
Analyst and associate seats are typically salaried and exempt from overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act, so long hours do not earn overtime pay. Much of the gap between a first-year analyst’s base and their total compensation is the year-end bonus, which in the US has no regulatory cap.
Pay transparency and bonus withholding in the US
New York City’s pay-transparency law (since November 2022), followed by New York State’s from September 2023, requires employers to post a good-faith salary range for roles based there. Since most US investment-banking seats sit in New York, posted ranges give a public check on base pay, though they exclude the bonus.
The IRS treats bonuses as supplemental wages. Employers may withhold federal income tax at a flat 22% on supplemental pay up to $1 million in a year and must withhold 37% on the excess (IRS Publication 15). That is withholding, not the final bill: the actual tax is settled on your return, and New York State and City income taxes are added on top.
